THE FOREST HOME
Interior Design + Furnishings in Lake Forest, IL
Nestled in Lake Forest, DGI Forest Home is where timeless elegance meets fresh creativity. Designed as a serene, family friendly retreat, the home reflects a thoughtful transition from city living to a more grounded setting while maintaining a refined, elevated feel. Its soft neutral palette is enriched with texture, blending classic silhouettes with modern elements and moments of surprise throughout the home. Every space was intentionally designed to feel welcoming, layered, and enduring.
The foyer sets a refined first impression through a striking arched portal and paneled accent walls that conceal functional storage. Sculptural Apparatus sconces and custom benches add warmth and purpose, with tailored proportions and a custom wood stain designed specifically for the space. Beyond the entry, a curated display of artwork draws the eye and quietly sets the tone for the spaces beyond.
The kitchen is designed around the clients’ preference for closed storage and a clutter free environment. Floor to ceiling cabinetry lines both side walls, integrating hidden appliances, a concealed pantry door, and a discreet coffee bar with built in fridge and freezer. The design remains minimalist and family friendly, with an emphasis on warm woodwork. Simple fixtures maintain clean lines, while softly sculptural kitchen stools introduce an organic contrast that complements the space’s refined restraint.
Located just off the kitchen, the breakfast room is designed as a relaxed gathering space for everyday mornings. Classic furnishings, including Churner chairs in a warm walnut finish, create a cozy and inviting foundation. Artwork by Brian Wills introduces a subtle sense of play, while the Shape Up chandelier by Roll & Hill serves as a sculptural focal point above the table.
Designed for comfort at scale, the family room features a custom sectional with two chaises that create ample space for everyone to settle in. An oversized custom coffee table is proportioned to the room and stained to coordinate with the surrounding cabinetry. The fireplace echoes design details from the kitchen, while large doors open to the covered patio, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.
This dining room functions as both a gathering space and a primary circulation zone, requiring a careful balance of openness. A clean lined dining table anchors the room without overwhelming it, while the absence of an area rug supports easy flow throughout the space. Floor to ceiling drapery softens the architecture and adds warmth, balancing the extensive use of wood across the floors, ceiling, cased openings, and furnishings.
A sculptural Apparatus Trapeze light fixture serves as the focal point, introducing an artful presence that is visible from multiple vantage points and complements the room’s refined simplicity.
The living room occupies a long, narrow layout with high traffic flow, designed as a comfortable family hangout and game space. Furniture is carefully scaled to maintain three-foot walkways while providing cozy seating, including ultra-comfortable recliners inspired by a trip to Vail. Existing artwork by Anne Coons is complemented by a commissioned sister piece, creating a cohesive and personal display.
The adjacent office blends function and refinement, accommodating both full-time and occasional work needs. Sleek cabinetry and open shelving keep supplies organized and accessible, while tall windows and drapery introduce natural light and warmth. Clean lines, tailored details, and a touch of brass in the light fixture create a serene, sophisticated environment that harmonizes with the home’s overall design.
The gym features fluted paneling along two walls, adding warmth and texture while providing durability and support for mounted equipment. The adjoining bathroom is designed with a spa like feel, complete with a tucked away sauna and shower for post workout recovery and pool use. Handmade gray tile in mixed finishes introduces subtle depth throughout the space. An integrated sink doubles as a hands free water refill station, with concealed filtration and chilling systems built into the surrounding cabinetry.
The stairs are designed with a quiet sense of refinement, featuring white oak treads and risers paired with a matching handrail and integrated LED lighting below. Custom plaster finished Articolo sconces are color matched to the walls, introducing subtle texture without visual distraction, while a minimalist runner softens the stair and protects against daily wear.
The powder room continues the restrained palette with large format textured tile that adds warmth in a minimalist way. A floating vanity with a custom integrated sink and mitered stone counter, fabricated from the same stone as the kitchen, anchors the space, while an Apparatus Tassel sconce introduces a moody, sculptural accent.
The long layout of the primary bedroom is balanced with thoughtful placement and layered details. The fireplace serves as a focal point, with the bed centered and flanked by matching 32-inch nightstands for symmetry. A light, airy palette is enriched with textural touches, including applied molding along the bed wall and ceiling beams that emphasize the room’s height.
A Scandinavian-inspired canopy bed fulfills the clients’ vision while maintaining the serene aesthetic. The fireplace features the same brick used outdoors, connecting the interior to the home’s exterior and creating a cohesive, tranquil retreat.
The primary bath is designed with a minimalist, spa like sensibility anchored by his and her floating wood vanities topped with mitered white quartz countertops. Articolo sconces introduce a subtle sense of drama, while large format stone tile wraps the space to create a cohesive, monolithic feel, with a raked texture reserved for the wall behind the tub. The soaking tub is set into a niche formed by the shower and water closet, creating a cozy and intentionally framed retreat.
This bedroom reflects the child’s personality with a space designed for both play and practicality. A larger loft provides extra room for activities and storage, while built-in bookcases and bins keep toys and belongings organized.
Darker paint and patterned wallpaper add depth and character, creating a cozy retreat that still feels connected to the home’s overall aesthetic. Thoughtful details make the space both functional and personal, balancing style with everyday livability.
The basement is designed as a dynamic play and relaxation zone for the whole family. The game room features a wall of cabinetry with a candy display, kitchenette, and hidden doors leading to the media room. The rec area is full of fun, with a ping pong table, climbing wall, monkey bars, rope swings, and a gaming gallery wall, alongside a cozy lounge space.
The media room offers a more relaxed atmosphere, anchored by a custom oversized sectional, a large TV, and playful graphic artwork. Minimalist design ties the spaces together, creating a versatile and inviting family hangout.
