UPWARD SPIRAL

Seeing the potential of an abandoned home isn’t easy, but when this gem of a house was available via foreclosure, the homeowners scooped it up at auction. This full-gut renovation allowed for an entire layout change and the ultimate upgrade to a modern, bright, inviting aesthetic.

Continuing the black and white color palette, the kitchen is stunningly beautiful and functional. With ample storage and a full pantry, spending countless hours preparing delicious meals for the family is easy. Rift-cut white oak cabinetry paired with opus quartzite offers durability with an organic touch. Open shelving near the kitchen sink provides display storage, allowing the family to showcase cookbooks, spare dishes, and more. We kept things sleek and clean with integrated panel-ready appliances and utilized drawer peg systems to keep dishes in place.

The entryway stairs are the star of the home. A bright white gentle spiral staircase with beautiful white oak engineered hardwood floors carries the eye up, allowing you to take in the scale of the space, while the multi-pendant in black helps set the tone for the rest of the home.

In the living room, custom built-ins flank the original fireplace and mantle, paying homage to the existing home and the beautiful, traditional detailing; slim picture lights illuminate the family’s display of books, plants, and framed photos.

The powder room offers a brief departure from our black-and-white palette, allowing a moody, textured indigo wallpaper to take over. An integrated sink with a left-hand faucet adds a touch of visual interest, while the hidden step stool integrated into the toe kick in the vanity ensures even the smallest family members can reach the sink.

Another pair of built-ins surround the dining room entrance, offering a beautiful vignette of the space. Showcasing the family’s interests and hobbies, a collection of coffee table books adds a fun moment of color to the neutral home and integrated LED lighting helps highlight each shelf.

High-gloss dark blue paint packs a punch in the home office, where custom built-ins offer hidden and display storage for a collection of sports memorabilia and artwork. The attached bathroom blends the dark blue paint with a black tile accent wall, effortlessly unifying the space with the rest of the home.

DGI redesigned the fireplace into the primary bedroom to create a serene moment with layered texture and natural elements. With a granite hearth, limestone mantle, original brick interior, and firewood stacked to the right, the materiality of the space exudes luxury.

Cool gray tones envelop the primary bathroom. A custom vanity utilizes the space well, while calacatta quartz wraps the counter and back wall for a luxe feature. Delicate glass shelves between the vanity mirrors showcase perfumes and nail polishes.  The bathtub sits center-stage, inviting long hours of relaxation while gazing out over the property through the nearby windows. The shower utilizes every inch of vertical space, providing a bit of impact and drama. Subtle details make a big impact, and just by rotating the wall’s subway tiles 90 degrees, a tall “baseboard” was created throughout the room to elevate the design.

DGI also redesigned three other bathrooms in the home, keeping the neutral color palette consistent with white tiles, white oak cabinetry, and black or chrome hardware. In the Jack-and-Jill bathroom, the shower floor features pale blue tile, adding a bit of fun to the clean space.

Originally the kitchen, the mudroom/kid’s study was repurposed into one highly functional space. Navy cabinetry houses outerwear storage, while white oak open shelving and additional full-height cubbies allow for every family member to have dedicated space for their belongings. Along the opposite wall, a workstation for the family’s little ones provides a perfect landing space for homework to be done upon arriving home.
