Ask Devon: October Q+A

We love connecting with our community on Instagram and sharing a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into our design and build process. Recently, we answered some of your most-asked questions, and we’ve rounded up those answers here so you can easily reference them anytime (and maybe learn something new along the way!).

Q: What stair runner do you recommend?

A: You should choose something that coordinates with the palette of your home, but I reccomend always choosing something with lots of visual texture. Solids make dirt, dust, and lint very noticeable, so choose something with movement so it doesn’t stand out too much, since these will get a lot of traffic.

Q: What is your favorite white paint?

A: My top white paints live forever on our blog! But, remember, lighting makes all the difference with white paint, so look at samples in your own home on multiple walls and at different times of the day.

Q: How do you test some of the finishes you recommended? Like flooring, countertops, etc..?

A: Get samples! Pour things on them, scratch them, scrape them, test out washing them—that’s what they’re for! We’ve also done a few versions of this for fun + educating (see above!).

Q: Is Taj Mahal quartzite overdone or timeless?

A: I feel like Taj Mahal is the Carrara Marble of Quartzites. Yes, you see it a lot, but that’s because it’s so good. Not only is it incredibly durable, it has incredible texture and there can be a wide variety in terms of veining/patterning and some trendy cool/gray while others are warmer and creamer. Soo, it’d say timeless.

Q: Any recommendations for how to select window coverings?

A: If you own your home and can afford custom window treatments, I highlight recommend the investment—they transform the space and truly make it feel complete.

  • For tall ceilings where you want to draw the eye up, ripple fold drapes on the ceiling track are my favorite.

  • For a more minimal and modern look where privacy is needed, roller shades (in a cassette) never fail.

  • For a softer look with smaller windows, Roman shades add a touch of texture.

  • For bedrooms, I always recommend ceiling mounted ripple fold drapes with blackout lining and go wall to wall if you can to truly seal out the light.

Q: Tips for putting together bedding and pillows (colors, textures, weight, etc..)?

A: Don’t overthink it, the best beds look casual and relaxed. Our formula is typically:

  • Neutral solid duvet cover with a fluffy down duvet inside

  • A textured coverlet/quilt folded and spread across the bed about a third from the foot of the bed

  • Big shams (either Euro or King) that match the duvet

  • Then a few textured accent pillows or one big lumbar

Choose colors and materials that tie in with the rest of the house and avoid patterns—this is meant to be calming and tranquil.

We hope you enjoyed this and found a few helpful takeaways for your own projects! If you have more questions you’d like answered, drop them in the comments or send us a DM—we love hearing what you’re curious about. And be sure to follow along on Instagram for the next round of Q&As!
