What to Prepare Before Meeting With Your Design-Build Team

Starting a renovation, addition, or custom home project is exciting, but it can also come with a lot of questions. At DGI Design x Build, we guide our clients through a structured process designed to ensure everyone is aligned before design work begins.

Our process starts with an introductory call, followed by a detailed proposal. Once the proposal is approved, we move into the Discovery Session, where we begin diving deeper into your vision, lifestyle, and design goals.

Here's how to prepare for each step.

Preparing for Your Introductory Call

The introductory call is all about determining whether we're the right fit for one another. While we may touch on your overall vision for the project, this conversation is focused more on the logistics than the aesthetics.

Before your call, consider the following:

1 — Your Project Scope

Think about what you'd like to accomplish.

  • Are you renovating a kitchen?

  • Adding square footage?

  • Remodeling your entire home?

  • Building from the ground up?

Having a clear understanding of the scope helps us determine how we can best support your goals.

2 — Your Budget

One of the most important conversations we'll have is around investment expectations. You don't need to have every number figured out, but having a realistic budget range in mind allows us to determine whether your goals and investment align.

3 — Your Timeline

Do you have a specific completion date in mind? Are you planning around a move, a growing family, or an upcoming life event? Sharing your ideal timeline helps us understand your priorities and determine what may be achievable.

4 — Construction Expectations

Major renovations often come with temporary disruptions to daily life. Before the call, consider questions such as:

  • Will you remain in the home during construction?

  • Are you open to relocating temporarily if needed?

  • How much flexibility do you have throughout the project?

These conversations help us establish realistic expectations from the beginning.

5 — Your Wish List

While we won't be diving deep into design details yet, it's helpful to have a high-level list of features or improvements you'd love to incorporate into your project. Think of this as your big-picture vision for the home.

Preparing for Your Discovery Session

Once we are officially working on your project, the first thing we do is schedule your Discovery Session.

By this point, our team already has a strong understanding of your project goals. The Discovery Session allows us to dive deeper into how you live, what inspires you, and how your home can better support your lifestyle.

1 — Gather Design Inspiration

Now is the time to start collecting inspiration. Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, and photos of spaces you love can all help communicate your style preferences and the overall feeling you're hoping to create in your home.

If you don’t know your style yet, or don’t want to pull your own imagery — no problem. Regardless of whether you do or not, our team pulls a variety of inspiration images that range across many different styles so we can review them live with you and dive deeper into your likes and dislikes. This collaborative exercise helps ensure we're aligned on the overall design direction before we begin developing concepts.

Don't worry if your inspiration varies or you can't pinpoint your exact style. Part of our job is identifying the common threads, uncovering what you're naturally drawn to, and translating those ideas into a cohesive design that feels uniquely tailored to you.

2 — Evaluate Your Current Home

One of the most valuable exercises before a Discovery Session is taking a closer look at your current home.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I love about this space?

  • What frustrates me on a daily basis?

  • Where do I feel limited?

  • What would make my routines easier?

Understanding what's working (and what's not) helps us create solutions tailored to your needs.

3 — Think About How You Live

Beautiful homes are about more than aesthetics. Consider how you use your space today and how you'd like to use it in the future.

  • Do you love entertaining?

  • Need better storage?

  • Work from home?

  • Have growing children?

  • Frequently host overnight guests?

The more we understand your lifestyle, the better we can design a home that supports it.

4 — Refine Your Priorities

As ideas begin to take shape, it's helpful to distinguish between your must-haves and your nice-to-haves. Knowing your priorities allows us to make thoughtful recommendations while keeping the project aligned with your goals.

The Foundation of a Successful Project

The best projects start long before selections are made or construction begins.

By taking the time to prepare for both your introductory call and Discovery Session, you'll help create a strong foundation for the entire design-build process. These conversations allow our team to understand not only what you want your home to look like, but how you want it to function, feel, and support your everyday life.

At DGI Design x Build, we believe thoughtful preparation leads to thoughtful design… and ultimately, a home that's uniquely tailored to you.
